Cavities frequently develop in the large chewing surfaces of back teeth, as the deep grooves and fissures that help to grind up food can be tricky to keep clean. Fissure sealants can protect these surfaces and consist of a very thin layer of strong plastic material that is liquid enough to flow into the fissures before being hardened. The result is a smooth, easy-to-clean surface that is protected and sealed from bacteria so cavities cannot develop. Fissure sealants are very thin and will not interfere with the way your teeth bite together.
Fissure sealants can only be applied to tooth surfaces that are free from decay and fillings and this is why we frequently recommend their application for children, soon after the permanent back teeth have emerged. However, there is no reason why adults with cavity-free back teeth cannot have this preventative dental care treatment. Application is quick, painless and non-invasive and fissure sealants can last for many years before they need reapplying.
